Summer is just about over but 18-year-old newcomer Jaicko bottled up some of that infinite sunshine from his native Barbados and sprinkled it over his sizzling hot debut single, “Oh Yeah.”

He shot the video for the radio-ready track in Los Angeles with famed director Benny Boom, who’s responsible for setting the scenes for Nelly and Kelly Rowland’s “Dilemma” and made sure things were spicy between Robin Thicke and his wife Paula Patton in his video for “Lost Without You,” just to name a few.

TWO MONTHS AGO,16-year-old Vita Chambers was sitting CXC examswith the rest of her peers.

Today, she has signedwith one of the biggest recordlabels in the music industry, Universal/Motown, and hasa promising single Like Boom due to be released in the Fall.

She’s the latest discovery of the SRP Music Group duo Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, who just keep churning them out. They’re the team responsible for Bajan international stars Rihanna and Shontelle. And, more recently, localsinger Hal Linton.

Vita’s discovery justgoes to show that anything is possible whenyou dream big.

Traditional path

The Barbadian singer,who hails from Foul Bay,St Philip, seemed to be following a traditional career path: she was doing wellin school and had plans to go on to a traditional universityto pursue a traditional profession – paediatrics.

But all the while, she was working diligently behind the scenes to get her talent noticed. She always knew she could sing and she’d written a few songs – that was half the battle, she just needed to be discovered.

So Vita used her initiative and posted some of the songs she’d written on her Myspace page in February this year.

The page was up for onlya week before it caught the attention of Rogers. By March, Vita was meeting with Rogers who flewto Barbados.

Before she knew it,she was on her way.

“I auditioned and he said, ‘Okay, we want to work with you’. I flew up to New York and I sanga few songs and we ended up signing with a production company. “I worked with them for a while and then on my birthday – June 10 – I found out that Universal/Motown wanted to sign me. It was very cool. I was like, ‘Thisis better than getting a car!’,”said the articulate teen viaa telephone interview from New York.

Vita, a former student of Wills Primary School, St Winifred’s School and the Codrington School, has already shot the music video for Like Boom and is working on her debut album which will feature songs co-written by her. Itshould be released early next year.

Once shy

It’s hard to imagine that the outgoing teen was once a shy little girl who feared the spotlight. Her first performance was in a play at Will’s Primary and she was terrified. But once she got up on the stage to sing, she felt at home.

“My mum said, ‘You know what? Everyone says you are so good, we should get you a voice trainer’. We got in touch with Alex Santoriello, he trained mefor a year and he was fantastic. Thenwe found Marissa Lindsay who is oneof the most amazing people I’ve ever met as a person and also as a trainer. From there, it was set in my mind that that’s what I wanted to do,” shared Vita.

Of course, at 16, she’s not embarking on this mammoth venture alone.Her parents Bob and Joy Chambershave put their careers on holdto accompany her overseas. Her dadis a British commercial pilot whileher mum, a dentist, is of Barbadianand Nigerian heritage.

They told the WEEKEND NATION they were excited for their daughter who dreamed of singing professionally since she was just 11 years old. Since then she has established a passion and relentless work ethic in her musical career.

Not too concerned

The Chambers said they werenot too concerned about the effectfame could have on their daughtersince she’d benefited from growingup in Barbados “with good West Indian values and will remain groundedand very family-oriented”.

As for the amount of control they’ll have over their daughter’s careerand image, they had this to say:

“Because Vita is a minor, we are ableto monitor and guide the direction

of her career in a parental way without affecting her success.”

Most teens would scowl at the thought of having to spend every waking moment with their parents, but Vita,an only child, loves it.

“They are travelling with me everywhere I go. I actually don’t mindit because I already spend all of my time with my parents anyway; they are my best friends. I am so privileged to have such supportive parents. I can turn to them for advice. If there is something that’s bothering me, they are always there for me. They love everything that I’m doing. They are with me every day. They are just ecstatic and I’m so grateful to have them,” said Vita.

She doesn’t recall at what ageshe started singing, but “my mum tellsme I was singing from the time I came out of the womb”.

Her first musical influences came from her parents’ record collections – her dad is a big rock ‘n’ roll fan while mum is an R&B lover. She names stars suchas Gwen Stefani, Led Zepplin and Pink as some of the artistes who have been big role models for her.

Her songs are pop, but also have an element of rock to them. And don’t expect her to be belting out lyrics that are too mature for her age. Most of her music will reflect “everything that goes through a teenager’s mind”.

Like Boom is about classic teenage puppy love and how this particular guy makes her feel whenever he’s around – like boom!

“The majority of my songs will be very youthful, lyrically and musically; things that I think people can really relate to. I’d like my look to have a vintage and contemporary feel, something familiar, but cool and edgy and new, too. Wherever it goes, it’s got to be honest. I have a lot of female friends and some have self-confidence issues,so always being true to yourself and comfortable in your skin is something I’m always concerned with,”she wrote on her Myspace page.

Vita is ever cognisant of the fact that she will become a role model as her career blossoms. She’s also very awareof the pressures of showbiz.

Outside of music, Vita has a few interests, some of which include surfing and scuba diving. And, no doubt with her busy schedule, she’ll miss the long walks on the beach with her four beloved dogs. But, fame calls.
